Preservation Scapes

2019 - 2022

high definition photo-scapes of foraged polystyrene, electroformed copper, and urethane resin

During my Fall 2019 residency at Gate 27 in Istanbul, Turkey I began making small, one inch cube resin encapsulations of the shore-washed Polystyrene “pebbles” I collected from islands that surround Istanbul. Sealing them in the urethane resin keeps them from degrading further into fine micro-plastic silt and will preserve their fragile forms for thousands of years. I also inserted electroformed copper I brought from my old Brooklyn Studio into the Polystyrene to give each encapsulation a more strangely organic look. Between the small size of each plastic “pebble” and the huge hyper-object scale of plastic in our oceans, I decided to take these little sculptures and transform them into giant images. Working on this throughout the pandemic in New York City, I intended these images to be viewed in virtual space. After many, many studies I teamed up with Santa Fe based photographer Dillon Sachs and together we were able to produce these large and high definition macro photographs of fifteen from my forty encapsulations. Each of these images is sized down for this website. If you would like to see a full sized image please contact me and I will share one of your choice.
